The Lieutenant Governor Returns To Lumsden — And A 100th Birthday Becomes History

March 2 at Heritage Home was never going to be just another afternoon on the calendar.

A resident who had only moved into the home in February was celebrating her 100th birthday. One hundred years of life. That alone would have filled the room with meaning.

Then Bernadette McIntyre walked through the doors.

Saskatchewan’s 24th Lieutenant Governor came not for a formal ceremony at Government House, not for a political announcement, but to honour a woman reaching a century of life right here in Lumsden.

There’s something fitting about that. McIntyre was born in Regina, raised on a farm near Bethune, and attended high school in Lumsden before earning a degree in economics from the University of Regina. Her career has included senior leadership with Saskatchewan Government Insurance and serving as CEO of the Wascana Centre Authority, along with decades of volunteer and community involvement across the province. She understands Saskatchewan communities because she grew up in one.

Her presentation to the birthday celebrant was thoughtful and respectful. She spoke clearly, acknowledging the magnitude of turning 100. It wasn’t rushed or overly formal. It felt personal.

Afterward, commemorative pins from the Lieutenant Governor’s office were handed out to those in attendance. These aren’t items you pick up at a store. They’re official keepsakes connected directly to the office, small but meaningful reminders of the visit.

What people noticed just as much was what happened next. She stayed. She spent time speaking directly with the birthday lady and visiting with other residents in the room. She listened. She smiled. She connected. It didn’t feel like a quick stop on a tight schedule. It felt like someone genuinely taking time.

Then the mood shifted from ceremony to celebration.

When the singing began, cake was served. A local singer and his wife, who had been invited to perform, filled the room with music. As the cake was placed in front of the birthday honouree, they led everyone in “Happy Birthday,” and the entire room joined in. Residents, staff, guests — voices together, strong and joyful.

It was one of those simple, powerful moments you don’t script.

The birthday celebrant was heard saying this was one of the best birthdays she had ever had. After one hundred of them, that says everything.

There was no spectacle, no grand production. Just a room full of people marking a milestone. A former Lumsden High School student who now serves as the King’s representative in Saskatchewan returning to celebrate a centenarian in a local care home.

And for a couple of hours that afternoon, Heritage Home wasn’t just a residence. It was the center of something quietly historic.
